Jockey Quotes

MARTIN GARCIA, COIL, Winner: “This was his first time going a distance and I expected a little bit more speed than that, but those other two horses didn’t go fast. My plan was to take him a little bit back to see if he could relax, and he relaxed, but it was so slow and he has such a long stride that I didn’t want to fight him. I saw a big hole open on the backstretch so I just let him go. But he was doing everything on his own. When I got to the top of the stretch I asked him and he just took off. When he was by himself, he started looking around, like he doesn’t know what to do. At the wire, he just put on the brakes. He’s a really nice horse.”

VICTOR ESPINOZA, RUNFLATOUT, Second: “He’s a nice horse and he’s improving. The more races he runs, he’s just going to get better. Today he showed he can go the distance. He was nice and relaxed all the way around.”

Trainer Quotes

BOB BAFFERT, COIL, Winner: “I wished I could have reversed posts with the other horse (Awesome Patriot). He (Martin Garcia) said he couldn’t hold him, they were going so slow. He was still pretty green when he made the lead and coming down to the wire. I was hoping to get a good Point Given. He’s just getting better and better. I was pretty impressed today with him, what he did and the way he did it. He’s still learning how to run. I was actually going to run him seven furlongs today at Belmont (the $250,000 Woody Stephens), but I changed my mind. I wanted to run him two turns to see how he’d handle it. I thought the other one (Awesome Patriot) would put up more of a fight, but he got a little hot going to the gate. I don’t know what’s next yet. We could either run in the Dwyer, the Swaps or the Haskell. But the Haskell’s the main goal.

JOHN SADLER, RUNFLATOUT, Second: “It was a good race for him. He rated nice in third and ran a good second. He didn’t have an excuse, the winner was a little better today, but I thought he ran really well.”

Notes: Baffert won the 2006 Affirmed with Point Determined, another son of Point Given…The $150,000 Dwyer will be run July 2 at Belmont Park, the $150,000 Swaps Stakes is July 9 at Hollywood Park and the $1 million Haskell Invitational will be run July 31 at Monmouth Park.
