KEVIN KRIGGER, MISS EMPIRE, Winner: “Very nice. I worked her behind horses and she worked the same way she ran today. She was excellent in the paddock. Peter (Miller) and I knew there was a lot of speed in front of us and we were just hoping she would run like she worked. The best part about it is that she relaxed. If she ran straighter, she would have drawn off more. I hit her left handed and she might have ducked from the whip.”
MARTIN PEDROZA, AWESOME ANNIE, Second: “I wish I would have been on the outside. It might have been a different outcome. I just broke out of there to get position, but I really didn’t want to be that close. It was the luck of the draw; you win some and lose some.”
RAFAEL BEJARANO, TILDE, Third: “She ran well. I was always in perfect position. She made a little run but the winner was much the best.”
PETER MILLER, MISS EMPIRE, Winner: “She spooked at the front of the gate when it opened last time (May 5) and shied and got away slow. She made up some ground going 4 1-2 (furlongs) and with the pedigree we thought she’d like the extra distance. Mr. (Gary) Barber and I decided to take a shot in here. She’s a half to (multiple graded stakes winning sprinter) Bordonaro and getting black type is big. My son Jacob is three weeks old, so this is a great Father’s Day present. The plan is to come back in the ($150,000) Landaluce Stakes (July 14).’’
WALTHER SOLIS, AWESOME ANNIE, Second: “I think the post position today killed us. We knew that we have a nice filly, but the pressure of (Awe’ Some Kitten) didn’t help us. You’re going to see a lot more from this filly.”
