JOE TALAMO, COST OF FREEDOM, Winner: “I’d really like to thank (owners) Gary and Cecil Barber and (trainer) John Sadler for giving me the opportunity to ride him. I didn’t have to do anything except steer him in the right direction. He’s such a classy horse, he does everything correct. He broke real good, relaxed and kicked home like it was a workout. John let me work him a few times in the morning and he showed me nothing but ability. He just strutted his stuff today.”
VICTOR ESPINOZA, RUNAWAY BANDIDO, Second: “It was a very good race for him. I thought they would go a little bit faster early, but still he ran well.’’
MARTIN GARCIA, A LIL DUMAANI, Third: “He tries so hard every time he runs. He just got beat by a good horse today.’’
LARRY BENAVIDEZ, ASSISTANT TRAINER TO JOHN SADLER, COST OF FREEDOM, WINNER: “The best interest in the horse – a nice confidence booster. With him coming down in class we were worried about him not winning. We kind of envisioned a race like this. Perfect trip. He broke a little inward but pretty impressive. It’s amazing when you run against a little lesser quality of horses how a good horse like him can put on a performance like this.’’
PETER MILLER, A LIL DUMAANI, Third: “It was a real cleanly run race. We knew that we wanted to send Cost of Freedom to the lead, so we made sure that we didn’t get in the way. I was hoping we could get up for second, but we just got out-nodded right on the line for second. But he ran well. I’m definitely happy.”
Notes: The final time of 1:08.58 was the fastest of the meet for six furlongs, bettering the 1:08.63 Square Deal ran two days earlier…Sadler has won the Cal Cup Sprint three times, more than any other trainer…Talamo also won the 2007 Sprint with Bilo.
