MIKE SMITH, GALLANT SON, Winner: “It set up great. I was going to try and cut the corner but I knew that Acclamation, the horse that (Joe) Talamo was on, always gives a good kick and I didn’t want to get myself in a pickle. I felt like I was on the best horse so I just stayed clear and he did the rest. They were smoking up front. It worked out great for us.”
FRANK LUCARELLI, GALLANT SON, Winner: “He can hang a little, but he went on with it today. I was a little worried, but around the eighth pole I looked back and I didn’t see anybody coming. We’ve been really trying to get him back on turf for quite a while. The Joe Hernandez (on March 7 at Santa Anita) was supposed to be on turf but it was called off the turf and we left him in. We didn’t want to Grade 1 him, so today was really the first opportunity. This race probably confirmed that he’s a notch above on turf what he is on the dirt. We really weren’t considering anything but I guess the Shoemaker is a possibility now.”
NOTES: The $250,000 Shoemaker Mile, a Grade 1, will be run on May 31 at Hollywood Park…The victory in the Inglewood was the second in a row for Smith, who won in 2009 with Madeo for owners Jerry and Ann Moss and trainer John Shirreffs…Chris Randall mentioned the Longacres Mile at Emerald Downs in August as a longterm goal for Gallant Son, who made the first five starts of his career – winning three stakes in succession – at the Auburn, Wash. track.
