JOE TALAMO, BRUCE’S DREM, Winner: “Man, what a day. I wish it was always like this. He’s such a nice horse and it’s always such a pleasure to ride him. He lays it down every time. He’s one of those horses who knows where the wire is. He just loves to win. It doesn’t really matter where he is on the track, either. You’ve got to watch him, because if you ask him out of the gate too much he’ll get a little keen. But working him so much, I kind of know how he is. I liked where he was down the backstretch because I knew they put up a pretty good quarter and half. This horse is the real deal.”
BRICE BLANC, COLGAN’S CHIP, Second: “That’s a tough beat again. He tries so hard, but a nice horse beat us again. This is a pretty good bunch of Cal breds. He does everything I ask of him and he runs hard for me every time. He showed at Del Mar that he can win. One of these days we’ll get there.”
MARTIN GARCIA, LIBERIAN FREIGHTER, Third: “My horse didn’t like the way the grass was today. It was too soft for him. He likes a hard course. But he gave it his best and ran his race.”
MIKE PUYPE, BRUCE’S DREAM, Winner: “He came up good. We pointed and waited for this one after his last. By design, I didn’t want to run with Sidney’s Candy after his blitzing run (in the La Jolla Handicap in August) at Del Mar. If you place this horse right and keep him with the right horses, he just runs his eyeballs out. He fires every time, and I thought it was a perfect plan to just wait for this race. We told Joe to ride him with a lot of confidence. Take nothing away from the horse he caught, but this horse wants it. He wants to win; he runs to win.”
JENINE SAHADI, COLGAN’S CHIP, Second: “The trip was beautiful and Brice rode him perfectly. He’s a front-running horse. We’ve tried to grab him and that doesn’t work so he is what he is. It’s just a little tough to keep getting beat by a nose. I’m very proud of him.”
NEIL DRSYDALE, LIBERIAN FIGHTER, Third: “He ran very well considering he doesn’t like the ground. He likes it firm firm. I know it was a fast time, but still he slips on it when it’s wet. So we’re very pleased with him. The trip was good. He just likes to hear his feet rattle, as they say. There was a lot of give in the turf today.”
Notes: The win was Talamo’s second in the California Cup Mile…He also won with Unusual Suspect, who was second in today’s Classic, in 2007….Talamo didn’t have a stakes win at the meet prior to Saturday.
