RAFAEL BEJARANO, TUSCAN EVENING, Winner: “It was a very hard race. I was in perfect position — I was comfortable but in the end my filly was kind of lugging in. I tried to keep her clear of the other filly, but it was real hard to go by. I really couldn’t hit her because she was lugging in and we were too close to the other horse. But overall she was on much better behavior today.”
VICTOR ESPINOZA, PATRICIA’S GEM, Second: “She ran good. It’s just one of those things. We were happy to be in front. She just got beat, but she was trying to come back at the end. The other filly, she’s good. And mine is good.”
TYLER BAZE, GOTTA HAVE HER, Third: “There was no speed in the race. At the quarter pole I thought I was going to win, but they went so slow early. The same thing happened to us last time. She made her run and she ran great. I’ve got no complaints.”
JERRY HOLLENDORFER, TUSCAN EVENING, Winner: “I talked with Rafael (Bejarano) earlier in the day. We went over the Gold Cup and this race. The strategy that we wanted for this race was to see if she would lay back off the pace. We were planning on laying about a half a length off the pace. It looked like she was real calm laying about a length and a little more. I’m so pleased we got a chance to do that because now I think that shows another dimension. Now we don’t have to have a horse that’s just a speed horse that has to have the lead. She showed another dimension today and I think she can get some more ground. Mr. de Burgh has been very good to me and gave me a horse that can run. That’s the hardest part about it, getting the horses that can run. We’re looking at a race at Del Mar and we will definitely look at the Beverly D at Arlington Park.”
RICHARD MANDELLA, PATRICIA’S GEM, Second: “She ran a great race and tried her heart out. No complaints.”
