Jockey Quotes

JOE TALAMO, DREAMY KID, Winner: “I’ll tell you what, I’m real glad Neil (Drysdale) let me work him last time. I really think that made a big difference. He was in blinkers and went the last quarter in : 22 2/5. That’s unheard of, not only for a 3-year-old, but even a stakes horse. That’s why I waited as long as I did. I knew that right when I asked him, he’d kick. I thought about going around on the far turn but I hate going that wide. Anytime you go four wide they’ll usually hang the last part. So I went to wait and wait and I said you know if he runs like he works, he’ll win. And man, he really had a nice turn of foot. He’s the kind of horse that’s just going to get better and better.”

MARTIN GARCIA, COIL, Second: “He just got beat. I just rode my horse, I didn’t worry about anyone else. There really wasn’t a difference between last time and this time. He ran well, just not well enough to win today.’’

Trainer Quotes

NEIL DRYSDALE, DREAMY KID, Winner: “He’s a nice, developing 3-year-old. Why did we jump him up and run here instead of an allowance race? We worked him the other day in blinkers and it made a huge difference. Actually, we wanted to put blinkers on for the last race but we couldn’t because he had won his previous race and you’re not allowed to put blinkers on after you’ve won and David Flores confirmed when he rose last time that he did need blinkers. Joe rode him today because he could do the 112 pounds. This horse is a half to Elysium Fields, who was cut out to be a nice horse but got injured in the (2008) Florida Derby. I thought (Talamo) was going to go around but I guess he said no….I’m going to go through. “

BOB BAFFERT, COIL, Second: “You know what, whenever you run on synthetic it really confuses all the riders, so it’s more of a stamina thing. I think (Garcia) was worried about (Runflatout). When he turned for home he thought he had a lot of horse, but this horse gets to waiting on horses. He said he never saw him coming. But (Dreamy Kid) ran a nice race. Turning for home I thought he was going to win by a lot, but you just can’t do that on a synthetic. I was disappointed with the other horse (Uncle Sam). I thought he would be a little better. Coil will go back east and will either run in the Haskell or Jim Dandy.”

JOHN SADLER, RUNFLATOUT, Fourth: “Garrett (Gomez) said he thought the distance might be a little too much for him. The pace was moderate so I was a little disappointed. I think we’ll go back to running him short.’’

Notes: The win was the first in the Swaps for Talamo, who was second aboard 1-5 favorite Sidney’s Candy in the race a year ago…Drysdale has won the Swaps three times. The most recent before Saturday was 1989 when Prized shocked Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Sunday Silence…The $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes will be run July 30 at Saratoga while the $1 million Haskell Invitational is July 31 at Monmouth Park.
