Jockey Quotes

GARRETT GOMEZ, GRANDEUR, Winner: “I wasn´t happy with the horse I was following (Optimizer), I wanted to find my way around him and I thought about sliding my way through Slim Shadey but decided I didn´t like that option. As we approached the final turn I decided to take him outside of Optimizer and when I asked him he went on with it without a problem.”

JOSEPH TALAMO, INTERACTION, Second: “We had an absolutely perfect trip, we never had to leave the rail and everything opened up for us. He ran a winning race. He just got outrun.’’

COREY NAKATANI, OPTIMIZER, Third: “I thought we were going to have an easy lead, but two of them went on with it. He´s had a hard campaign as a 3-year-old. He ran a good race and never gave it up. He showed he belongs.”

Trainer Quotes

PADDY GALLAGHER, GRANDEUR, Winner: “I really didn’t do much with him. I didn’t have to. This was his third graded race in six weeks. I’m just thankful that the owner (Yvonne Jacques) left him with me. She lives in Europe and I believe the plan was to take him back there, depending on what he did today and eventually run him in Dubai. I’d sure like to keep him, but he’s going back to (his former trainer) Jeremy Noseda.”

JOHN SICA (Assistant trainer, D. Wayne Lukas), Optimizer, Third: “I thought he ran well. He hung in there pretty well. He ran hard and he’ll probably get a breather now. He’ll ship to (Oaklawn Park) in the next day or two.”

Notes: Grandeur was the first 3-year-old to win the Hollywood Turf Cup since Bien Bien in 1992. Bien Bien was moved up to first due to the disqualification of Fraise…The victory was the fifth stakes win of the meet for Gomez, tops among all jockeys.
