RAFAELA BEJARANO, UNUSUAL HEATWAVE, Winner: “It was a good trip. I followed the favorite (Stoney Fleece) the whole way and stayed out of trouble. He was much the best today. At the beginning, it didn’t look like he wanted to go, but at the half mile pole he really picked it up. I was waiting for the favorite to move by the three eighths and I decided to wait a little more until I came to the stretch. As soon as we straightened away I let him run and he took off.”
JOEL ROSARIO, STONEY FLEECE, Second: “A couple of seconds today. I guess that’s just the way it goes sometimes. I was in a good spot and I thought he had a good chance to win, but the other horse came from behind and got me. It was a great race and both horses ran well.”
ALEXIS BARBA, UNUSUAL HEATWAVE, Winner: “I was always confident about the distance with this family. I know the family well and believe me, they’re not sprinters. He’s just done things a little backwards. He’s a May foal and he’s just coming around now. I was a little worried, because I thought we were a little too far back. But I know we had the rider of the day and the turn of foot is there and he seems to use it when he’s not pressured.”
JOHN SADLER, STONEY FLEECE, Second: “The post (10) really cost him. He was four and five wide the whole way. But he ran well. He’s a hard-trying horse. He’s not a champ, but he’s a good horse. He’ll come back on turf or synthetic, just not dirt.” Notes: Alphie’s Bet, a half-brother to Unusual Heatwave, won the 2010 Snow Chief for Barba and owners Ellen and Peter O. Johnson, Sr. and Teresa McWilliams.
