JOEL ROSARIO, EVITA ARGENTINA, Winner: “I rode her last time going longer and she really didn’t have much punch in the stretch. I think she’s better going short. Today, when I asked her, she really responded. I knew they were going very fast so I wasn’t worried about being so far back. That’s how she likes to run. She was moving so fast I just wanted to make sure she was in the clear.”
GARRETT GOMEZ, SILVER SWALLOW, Second: “I wanted to bide my time because I knew they were moving along. Before I went into the turn I looked to see where that other filly (Evita Argentina) was. I saw she was right on my hip, a lot closer to me than I wanted. My filly, she just didn’t have the turn of foot that the other filly does.”
MICHAEL BAZE, LADY LUMBERJACK, Third: “She ran hard, she did everything perfect, but the winner just blew by us. But she’s definitely a nice filly. She’ll get a stakes win.”
H4. Trainer Quotes
JOHN SADLER, EVITA ARGENTINA, Winner, COCO BELLE, sixth: “Run around two turns, that’s what she can’t do. Seven-eighths is her thing. She’s been very good at that. Keeneland didn’t work out for her too well. She came out of that race with a bruised foot, so she had an excuse that day. Other than that, she’s run very well all the time. We tried her around two turns again in the last one — the Hollywood Oaks — but that’s not her thing. I’ll probably run her in the Rancho Bernardo. I’m hoping she will be nice and strong by the fall for the Breeders’ Cup at seven-eighths (Filly & Mare Sprint). One turn for sure. We tried her a couple times at two turns because there weren’t races. This is a good distance for her, so we’ll keep her right in there, maybe 6 ½ at Del Mar. We’ll see how that track plays down there. If it plays for closers, that will help.
“It’s been a good meet, I think I’ve won more stakes races than anybody – seven or eight. So it was a good way to cap it off.
(What do you think of Joel Rosario?) “Terrific, he is the next big thing, I think. He is just getting better and better and getting more confidence. He’s a very strong young rider, so he has a big future at 23. They take big leaps when they are young, getting better like that.”
NOTE: The stakes win was a meet-leading seventh at the meet for trainer *John Sadler
