Jockey Quotes

VICTOR ESPINOZA, ZENSATIONAL, Winner: “I wanted to keep him wide down the backstretch because when he’s close to other horses he likes to fight. It helped a lot because he relaxed after that. The way he finished today was unbelievable. This is the second time I rode him and he showed big improvement from that race to this one.”

ALONZO QUINONEZ, RUSH WITH THUNDER, Second: “My horse ran great. I rode him with a lot of confidence. Last time he ran real good, but we had a little bit of trouble. We had to check a couple of times. Today I tried to keep him in the clear and he really responded good.”

JOEL ROSARIO, NOBLE COURT, Third: “There wasn’t much speed to help him today, but he finished okay. He came running, but the horses in front kept going.”

Trainer Quotes

BOB BAFFERT, ZENSATIONAL, Winner: “I like when they run like they train. It’s very rare. He just has that brilliant speed. He’s getting better and he’s relaxing a little bit. I told him (Victor Espinoza) to keep him out there. If you bring a horse like him to the rail, he’ll just take off on you. He kept him in the middle to keep him under control. Victor is learning how to ride this horse too. He’s a very difficult horse to ride. The race we’re looking at next would be the King’s Bishop. He won’t run for a while. They were really good to let me throw him in a Grade I against older. It’s good having owners with confidence in you and I have confidence in the horse. I just don’t want to run him too many times. I want him fresh for the Breeders’ Cup.”

A.C. AVILA, RUSH WITH THUNDER, Second: “He tried hard. Now to Del Mar. He likes it there better.”

JOHN SADLER, NOBLE COURT, Third: “It was a speed-favoring track today and there was no pace up front. My horse was finishing good, but there was just no pace. They kind of scratched some of the speed so that horse (Zensational) was just cruising along. My horse ran well. He was flying but he just didn’t get up.”

NOTES: Zensational was the first 3-year-old winner since Debonaire Junior in 1984. The win was the third in the Triple Bend for Victor Espinoza.
