TYLER BAZE, MONTEREY JAZZ, Winner: “David Flores gave me a tip about riding this horse. He told me don’t hit him because he always gives 100 percent. The last race I never hit him and today I never hit him. He doesn’t really break fast, he kind of breaks flat-footed. Going a mile and one-eighth, Craig (Dollase) said not to send him too hard because he didn’t want him running off. But once he starts going he just pulls you along. You’ve just got to try and nurse him along as best you can and pray he has something to come home with. He was strong at the end today.”
RAFAEL BEJARANO, ARTISTE ROYAL, Second: “He ran really well, he just needs a little more distance. He was really finishing. Past the wire he passed the winner easily.”
CRAIG DOLLASE, MONTEREY JAZZ, Winner: “He had a fracture of the hind foot so we gave him plenty of time off. It took him a while to get back into form. He had a couple soft turf courses over at Santa Anita, which he does not like. Now we had fast and firm. He’s the man now. He’s back. I told Tyler (Baze) if the two (Storm Military) wants to go the first quarter of a mile, it is the key to the race. He let him go, settled nice and then took charge on the backstretch. The race was over by then. We’ll keep our options open for Del Mar or possibly the Longacres Mile at Emerald Downs.”
