MIKE SMITH, GALLANT SON, Winner: “That was great. It all worked out. We got out of the one hole really well. That was the key. I knew I had a lot of horse, but he tends to wait when he gets to the last horse. It wasn’t necessarily the one next to me (Streakin’ Mohican) that I was worried about. It’s getting caught, because he waits. When someone gets momentum on him, he can’t get it going again.”
RAFAEL BEJARANO, STREAKIN’ MOHICAN, Second “He tried hard. He just got a little intimidated when the other horse went by (Gallant Son).”
FRANK LUCARELLI, GALLANT SON, Winner: “He’s a tough horse in the right spots. I liked his chances on the turn, but he’ll kind of hang when he gets up to the leaders and I was hoping he didn’t get there too soon. He held them off pretty well. We’ve always talked about it, but we’re not sure what his best distance is. I thought a mile is his distance but I’m not sure running short like this that he might not be as good or better.”
