JOE TALAMO, MENSA HEAT, Winner: “He just wasn’t himself in his last race. He was done at the five-eighths pole. Thankfully they found out what was wrong with him. They let me work him a couple of times, so I knew he was doing so well. He was so fresh today. I knew they were going along pretty good and he was just tugging me along. Congratulations to the connections. They claimed him for $25,000 and they’ve managed him so well. He’s so confident right now, it seems like he can do whatever he wants.”
TED H. WEST, MENSA HEAT, Winner: “He had some very bad ulcers two months ago and you just don’t know how fast they’re going to heal. His appetite is great and his coat looks great, but you always wonder if maybe they’re still there and not completely healed. But I think he answered that question. He tipped his hand in the paddock. He just looked great and his attitude was really good. He colicked a bit about 5 days before his last race then cleaned up (his feed) after that, but I think it was a little warning that something deeper was going on. He didn’t eat at all the night of the race (California Cup Sprint Oct. 29) and the days after, so we scoped his stomach and found the ulcers. We have a lot of options with him because he likes turf, dirt and synthetic.”
Note: Mensa Heat has won five of eight and earned $248,422 since being claimed for $25,000 by West for owner Peter Redekop April 15 at Santa Anita.
