Jockey Quotes

RAFAEL BEJARANO, ROUSING SERMON, Winner: “I knew (Cyclometer) was the only speed and (Mike Smith) would try to take advantage of that. I just tried to get him to relax and at the quarter pole, I could see it was probably him and me. At that stage, I just let him go and my horse showed me a big kick.

MIKE SMITH, CYCLOMETER, Second: “They backed him in and out of the gate a couple of times because he stands better when they do that. I got away in good order, was in front and had no excuse.”

Jockey Quotes

JOE TALAMO, WARREN’S VENEDA, Winner: “I was glad I was able to get to the outside. That was the only concern for (Lewis) and I. It looked like (Sister Kate) was the only speed and I was fortunate enough to get around her. She’s such a classy filly and obviously loves this track. I worked her before her last race (7 ¼ length optional claiming victory Oct. 13 at Santa Anita) and she’s even better now than she was then. I think the farther the better with her.”

RAFAEL BEJARANO, CURVY CAT, Second: “The pace was pretty slow and I tried to follow the winner. My horse kept running, but she was going kind of steady at the end.”

Jockey Quotes

COREY NAKATANI, ARETHUSA, Winner: “She ran a big race. When Eoin (Harty) asked me to ride, he told me she’s by A.P. Indy and would get the distance. I said, ‘Perfect, let’s go get the money, boss.’ My main thing was to just get her into a rhythm and she would take me at them. And that’s what happened. Any time you can win a race like that with a 2-year-old filly, the future looks bright.”

MARTIN GARCIA, BE PROUD, Second: “I thought I was going to be on an easy lead, but (Edwin Maldonado on Pleasant Miss) kept sending and kissing and whipping. She’s one of those horses that gets the bit and just wants to take off.”

Jockey Quotes

COREY NAKATANI, SHARED BELIEF, Winner: “That was an impressive 2-year-old right there. Being by Candy Ride, he’s got the breeding to be any kind. He was very focused. When I worked him, he did everything so easily, but I didn’t ride him the first time and I didn’t know he’d be so relaxed. When they do the things this horse did today, it’s pretty exciting.”

RAFAEL BEJARANO, KOBE’S BACK, Second: “He broke OK, but he’s just not that quick. I was in a good position right behind the winner at the three-eighths. My horse ran his race, but I was never going to beat the winner. My horse was still running to the end, but the winner was much the best.”

Jockey Quotes

VICTOR ESPINOZA, BAJAN, Winner: “She’s going in the right direction. She’s very easy to ride and when I ask her to go she’s quick, really fast. It’s nice to ride horses like that. She’s such a nice filly right now and she’s still learning. She’s going to be a real nice filly.”

MARIO GUTIERREZ, FOR EMMA, Second: “We broke well and she relaxed for me. She may have lost a little interest, but she picked it up again on the turn. I think she’s going to be real good.”

Jockey Quotes

RAFAEL BEJARANO, TAMARANDO, Winner: “I used him a little bit early to make sure he didn’t get too far back. I found my position right away and just went from there. I tried to make a little move at the half mile to get position by the three-eighths. He’s got a real good kick. The distance is the key for him. He can really run.”

AGAPITO DELGADILLO, ELECTRIC EDDIE, Second: “He had to steady behind horses at the quarter pole, but he wasn’t going to beat (Tamarando) anyway. He still ran pretty well.”

Jockey Quotes

GARY STEVENS, MARKETING MIX, Winner: “(Trainer) Tom (Proctor) told me in the paddock to just take the race to them. He said this mare can gallop faster than the rest of them. I didn’t know what the Brazilian horse (Hawk’s Eyes) was going to do and (his rider) Victor (Espinoza) was intent on getting the lead. I couldn’t have paid to have a better rabbit out in front of me. I just let my mare gallop. I had it in my head to two-minute lick her to the three-eighths pole and set her down and work her three eighths of a mile. I don’t know if (Proctor) was necessarily using this as a tune up for the (Grade I, $750,000) Beverly D (Aug. 17 at Arlington Park), but it sure worked out. She was very, very happy.”

JULIEN LEPAROUX, DHAAMER, Second: “No excuse. I came up to the filly and I thought I was going to go by her, but she went again. My horse ran his race, but she was just a little better.”

Jockey Quotes

MIKE SMITH, EMOLLIENT, First: “I got away slow, so I kept her covered up. She broke so flat footed I just put her right in behind. I could tell how slow they were going, so I went for it to get on the clear and make the pace move. Looking back at it now, I can say it was a great move.”

VICTOR ESPINOZA, EMOTIONAL KITTEN, Second: “Turning for home, I thought I had the race won, but she kind of hung the last eighth. She still ran a great race.”
