Jockey Quotes

TYLER BAZE, TRAVESURA, Winner: “I wasn’t really expecting to be on the lead. If they let me go easy, I’m going to take it. The plan was to lay third or fourth. I really thought she could route after her last race. I knew she would be tough to beat today. This is a nice filly. Bigger and better things, maybe.”

GARRETT GOMEZ, PUSSYCAT LIPS, Second: “I just couldn’t get any kind of running room. I wound her up but never was able to kick her into gear. I never hit her. She traveled well, she’s a beautiful moving filly. She’s not real big but covers a lot of ground.”

Jockey Quotes

GARRETT GOMEZ, DEN’S LEGACY, Winner: I knew this horse would go through wherever I pointed him. He’s pretty handy that way. He was hitting the hole that wasn’t there yet. When the hole opened up, I told him, ‘Let’s go.’ I just didn’t want to go from zero to 100 as fast as I could. I kind of pushed the gas pedal down and he kicked on. I didn’t want to get into him any more than needed. I didn’t think (Rising Legend) could get to me.”

JULIEN LEPAROUX, RISING LEGEND, Second: This horse has a really bright future. He was shuffled back, but that’s how a lot of them run first time in this country. When I asked him to run, he made a big run, just a little too late. He galloped out strongly and I think the more distance, the better.”

Jockey Quotes

GARRETT GOMEZ, DATA LINK, Winner: “I warmed him up good and he warmed up well. He bounced away from there and put me in a good spot. From there I could decide whether to ease back or stay where I was. He always traveled beautiful for me. I felt we weren’t going too fast. The only thinking I really had to do with him was from the five-eighths pole to the far turn. There were a couple of horses who were switching places (moving in and out) and I had to decide whether to stay inside or come around. I hit the front so soon, I didn’t know what he was going to be like. I never gave him a chance to ease himself down. When I got into him, he really went.”

JULIEN LEPAROUX, DOUBLES PARTNER, Third: “I followed the winner. I was right there on the inside at the quarter pole but he just got a little outkicked at the end. He ran great. Good race. I’ve ridden him four times now and we’ve hit the board every time.”

Trainer Quotes

SHUG MCGAUGHEY (by telephone), DATA LINK, Winner: “We’re very pleased with the way he ran today and very pleased with the way Garrett Gomez rode him. They went slow early, but then they picked it up and Gomez was in a great spot. He got shuffled back last time (when fifth in the Grade I Shadwell Turf Mile Oct. 6 at Keeneland), lost all his position and then he was wide on the turn. We think he’s a pretty good little horse. He’ll ship back Monday, then see we’ll see how he’s doing.”

Jockey Quotes

JULIEN LEPAROUX, REALLY MR GREELY, Winner: “He broke sharp. I wanted to be on the lead. He relaxed well and left me alone, which was beautiful, and when I asked him to go he answered nice. At the three-eighths pole, I felt they were coming at me, so I asked him to start going, and he never really stopped.”

RAFAEL BEJARANO, SUPER NINETY NINE, Second: “No excuses. He ran well and everybody (from Baffert’s barn) ran well. We knew they all had a chance.”

Jockey Quotes

RAFAEL BEJARANO, GOING FOR A SPIN, Winner: “When I saw a lot of speed in the race, I just tried to place her in a spot where she would be comfortable. I expected her to come running at the end, and she did. It helps when all the horses start bunching up on the turn.”

Jockey Quotes

TYLER BAZE, KILLER BEAR, Winner: “They were going fast and that helped him. This is kind of a funny horse. He was crazy last week when I worked him. He wouldn’t work, then he was running down the road all through the backstretch. You just have to let him do it when he wants to do it. Right when we hit the turn, he started moving by himself and I just went with him. He’s a nice horse. He has talent, he just has to keep it together. It’s nice to see what he can do. I can’t wait to ride him back.”

Jockey Quotes

JULIEN LEPAROUX, MIDNIGHT BALLET, Winner: “I think the two-turn distance helped her. She’s a big filly and she breaks OK, but she’s not real fast. The six furlong (allowance) race (Oct. 4 at Santa Anita) was just too fast for her. I decided to put her on the rail, save ground and follow the favorite (Scarlet Strike). I got her out at the quarter pole and she made a nice run.”

TYLER BAZE, RENEE’S TITAN, Second: “I think she’s a nice filly. This was my first time on her and they didn’t give me any instructions. I’m looking forward to riding her again.”
