Jockey Quotes

RAFAEL BEJARANO, BOOK REVIEW, First: “I just followed Rumor out of the gate and I was sitting very comfortable behind her. She likes to make one big run, so I just put her where she would feel comfortable and by the three-eighths pole I decided to move in closer and start to make my move. I knew she would come running at the end.¨

VICTOR ESPINOZA, TEDDY´S PROMISE, Second: “She ran well, but I feel she didn’t run her best race today.’’

Jockey Quotes

GARY STEVENS, ALPINE LUCK, Winner: “I wasn’t concerned with being on the lead with him. Last time (trainer) Mike (Harrington) told me to ride him like a route horse, but he got a flyer leaving there and was on the lead. I thought Mike was going to kill me, but I told him I rode him like a route horse from the three-eighths and I won with something left. He got a quick break today and (Bejarano on Ontology) chirped to his horse leaving there and it sent my horse on. He was flicking his ears back and forth down the backside. He actually reminded me a lot of my first (Juvenile) winner (Hilco Scamper in 1985) going down the backstretch with his ears going like that. I said, ‘How fun is this’? He gave me great acceleration like last time. I was just playing with the runner-up (Ontology June 22). I could have won by six, so I had quite a bit of confidence going in. I actually wanted a horse in front of him just to teach him. I really do think he wants to go a route of ground.”

RAFAEL BEJARANO, ONTOLOGY, Second: “I had a beautiful trip, but nobody put pressure on the winner. I tried to get to the front, but the other horse was just quicker. I saved ground but the winner was best.”

Jockey Quotes

FRANK ALVARADO, SHE’S A TIGER, Winner: “She broke sharp and I just let her go to the lead. I was being patient with her. By the three-eighths I could feel the pressure on the inside and I felt somebody coming on the outside, but I wasn’t worried. I knew what I had.”

MIKE SMITH, E EQUALSMCSQUARED, Second; “I was impressed with her and she has room to grow. That’s always a good sign. She was a little green down the backside with the dirt hitting her in the face. She wanted out. If I could have gotten her to run a little straighter, it would have been a little tighter.’’

RAFAEL BEJARANO, PLEASANT MISS, Third: “I was in perfect position behind (She’s a Tiger), but the horse outside me put a little pressure on me. I had a good trip, the best horse beat me.”

JULIEN LEPAROUX, NEED YOU NOW, Winner: “I worked her in the morning and Mike (Mitchell) asked me if he should take the blinkers off. I told him it really doesn’t matter because of her style. She put me right in the race today. She doesn’t have that kick, but she just keeps going. Last time she ran OK (fourth in the Grade III Senorita May 11), but kind of even. I had a clear trip and didn’t have to come between horses or anything and that’s why she kept going.”

Jockey Quotes

JOE TALAMO, SCHIAPARELLI, Winner: “My filly was traveling really well. I know the fractions were pretty quick but she was doing it well within herself. But I’ll tell you what, it was all her. She was pressed all the way, and had to really fight the whole race to get the job done. She was kind of looking around a little bit down the lane, which she kind of does sometimes. I had to ride her a little harder than I thought I would have to. But she pulled it off and every time (Egg Drop) would get close to her she kept finding more. For her to get a mile, especially in (1:34.11) is a pretty good time for a filly stretching out for the first time. She’s definitely got a future going long on the turf.”

MARTIN GARCIA, EGG DROP, Second: “She ran big today. The winner is a really good filly, but my horse ran one of her best races. I knew we were going fast, but she was really comfortable. After today, I think she can handle more distance”

Jockey Quotes

MIKE SMITH, CUSTOMER BASE, Winner: “She ran great. She’s really getting good. I rode her going six furlongs (third in the Great Lady M. Stakes May 26) and she actually showed some speed. I was wondering how she was going to be today going a mile and one quarter. She relaxed for me and I was able to cover her up. It was pretty much her after that.”

Jockey Quotes

RAFAEL BEJARANO, CHIEF HAVOC: “I sent him away from the gate but before the first turn I felt a little pressure from the inside. I wasn’t expecting that. When (Dice Flavor) tried to come between me and the rail, I was a little surprised. I had to ask him a little to make sure I was on the lead and back on the rail. By the six-furlong pole, I knew I had a lot of horse and could do whatever I want. Little by little I let him go and made sure to get him into position. In the stretch, I had a lot of horse left.”

COREY NAKATANI, TIZ A MINISTER, Second: “I talked it over with (trainer) Paul (Aguirre) and I thought it would be best to just let him get comfortable. Wherever he was at was where we were going to be. That’s the way he likes to run. He made a solid run, but when you have speed like (Chief Havoc), you can pretty much do what you need to do. That’s just part of racing.’’

MIKE SMITH, DICE FLAVOR, Third: “If I could have done anything different, it would have been just grab the bull by the horns and go with it. I thought about it going into the first turn, but then (Bejarano) kind of let his horse out a notch and I couldn’t keep up at that point.”

Jockey Quotes

VICTOR ESPINOZA, CENTRALINTELIGENCE, Winner: “He was ready today. He was ready to go. The race set up very well, the way I wanted it. I just saved his energy for the end and let him run when it was time. Last time I rode him he broke a little bit slow, so I came and worked him out of the gate the other day prior to this race. He performed to our expectations.

EDWIN MALDONADO, COMMA TO THE TOP, Second: “He ran huge. Going seven furlongs, I got him to relax beautifully and got a good run out of him.”
