JULIEN LEPAROUX, DHAAMER, Winner: “There was a lot of pressure before this race. All the family is here. But he’s a nice horse and won easily today. I couldn’t have asked for a better present for my birthday (Leparoux turned 29 today). In a four-horse field, everything went pretty much as planned. We knew there was not going to be pace. We thought before the race (Juniper Pass) was the one to beat. I just followed that one and when I asked him, he came very nice for me. He was just much the best today.
GARRETT GOMEZ, SWITCH, Winner: “It kind of set up for her today. Things kind of worked out, but she was traveling very well. I had some difficulty on the turn with her, a little miscommunication, but once I got her lined up turning for home, she did what she was supposed to do and her class just showed. She showed she is a nice mare. I don’t know how many Grade I races she has won (two), but she ran a really nice race today and hopefully she will continue to get back on the form that she once had.”
MARTIN GARCIA, SUGARINTHEMORNING, Second: “She is a great filly, she always tries so hard. I let her run away from the gate, she wanted to be there. We tried to get to the lead, she did and I got beat by a really good horse.”
MIKE SMITH, LADY OF SHAMROCK, Winner: “She was a victim of a slow pace last time and today it worked out real great where there was a little more pace and I was able to stay in the pocket the whole way and take advantage of it. (Nayarra) didn’t corner too well and that really helped us out because it open the race up and I was able to get up in there and on through. I know what she is capable of, but she was a little on her toes warming up and I was a little bit concerned she might be a little bit aggressive today, but honestly she turned off really well once the gates opened and after that got into a great rhythm.’’
JOE TALAMO, MY GI GI, Second: “She ran great. I was surprised that other filly (Lady Of Shamrock) got through on the rail, that was a real tight spot. My filly gave it a roll and I was very proud of her.”
RAFAEL BEJARANO, EXECUTIVEPRIVILEGE, Winner: “As soon as we broke from the gate, I put her right behind horses and got her into a good position. I knew all I had to do was wait because at the end I was going to have a lot horse. The race was over as soon as we hit the stretch and I let her run.” Asked if this race was more impressive than first career start: “I think so because she was more prepared today and she was doing really well before the race. I am really happy.’’
JOE TALAMO, SPEEDINTRUTHECITY, Second: “I had a perfect trip, just got outrun. For her second career start, she is definitely getting there. She is stakes placed. Hopefully we will have some fun with her this year.”
JOE TALAMO, SCHERER MAGIC, Winner: “We had a perfect trip, I was able to tuck in around the turn, save a little ground and came out turning for home and blew them down. It was a great trip. John Sadler has done a great job getting him ready you know, he had a nice series of long workouts before this race, he was ready to go.”
MARTIN PEDROZA, CARSON´S CROWN, Second: “I was very pleased with my colt´s effort. I hope I made the right move now. Now I have to watch (trainer Jerry) Hollendorfer´s horse (Via Villaggio) run in the ($400,000, Grade II Delaware Oaks at Delaware Park). I had the choice to stay here or go there, but I like this horse a lot and decided to ride here.”
JOE TALAMO, TROIS AUREOLE, Winner: “This is a nice filly. I think she’s really starting to come into herself. She ran her race last time (Grade II Honeymoon Handicap June 9) but just got outrun. She got a little nervous in the paddock that day but it was one of those days when it was so hot and real muggy. But today, she had a turn of foot just out of this world. I kept her behind until the top of the lane and when I wheeled her out, I didn’t even have to hit her. She just exploded. (Sadler) has done such a great job with her. Every time she comes to the races, she’s ready to go.”
CHANTAL SUTHERLAND, GAME ON DUDE, Winner: “I could actually hear Rafael yell ‘I’m coming Chantal’ at the quarter pole. We’re friends, and it was just like ‘I’m coming to get you,’ like a game of tag. He (Game On Dude) wanted to go after that other horse (Spud Spivens) early and kept fighting and fighting, but then he kind of chilled out a little bit. When he started getting a little pushy about it, I had to let him do his thing. Down the lane, I didn’t want to hit him or push on him, but I was getting a little nervous.’’ Asked about becoming the first woman to ride a Gold Cup winner: “It’s exciting, I feel really honored. It’s pretty cool. I hope I’m one of many more to come.”
RAFAEL BEJARANO, RICHARD’S KID, Second: “No complaints. The other horse was just a little too good. (Game On Dude) was really comfortable and by the three-eighths he was completely in hand. I thought I I was going to be second anyway but I had to try something. He gave me a big kick. He tried hard and never quit. The winner and my horse were the only two that were running at the end. The last time he ran (a win in the Prove It Stakes June 8) was to prepare for this race. He’ll be a little tighter next time. I don’t think he was 100 per cent today, but he tried really hard. The winner was much the best.”
GARRETT GOMEZ, KETTLE CORN, Third; “I had to move a little earlier than I wanted. Bejarano started putting pressure on me and once he did that I had to ask him for everything he had. He finished willingly but wasn’t able to catch the front two.”
MARIO GUTIERREZ, QUIET OASIS, Winner: “This is just great. I’ve had the opportunity to ride this filly three times. Last time she was a little bit short. She didn’t fight me at all today and was a real professional. I’ve been working her in the mornings, and I knew she was really feeling good for this race. She’s been settling down really nicely in her works. I thought if she could settle like that in the afternoon, nobody could beat her.
GARRETT GOMEZ, MEGA DREAM, Second: “She was wound up real tight. If we can work on her mind a little bit and get her settled down, I think we’ll be in good shape. It was a good performance and she traveled well. She hadn’t run really well going two turns before, but I think it’s more mental than anything.”
