INGLEWOOD, Calif. (October 15, 2010)—Making his second start since being claimed for $50,000 by trainer Mike Mitchell in July, Achak welcomed a return to a synthetic surface Friday at Oak Tree/Hollywood Park, winning the $40,640 feature.
The second longest shot in a field of six at 8-1, the Irish bred ended a nine race losing streak with a 1 ¼ length victory over Indian Firewater.
Owned by Brown, Brown and Little Red Feather Racing, the 4-year-old Invincible Spirit gelding out of the Distant Relative mare She’s So Lovely won for the fourth time in 19 starts. The $24,000 payday boosted his earnings to $119,253.
Seventh of eighth in his first race for Mitchell on the Del Mar turf Sept. 8, Achak received a ground saving trip from jockey Alonso Quinonez while racing off the pace.
Angled out for room in the stretch, the Irish bred collared Indian Firewater in the final sixteenth. It was his first win since a sprint score on the hillside turf course at Santa Anita on Nov. 4, 2009.
Now 3-for-5 on synthetic, Achak returned $19.20, $7.40 and $3.80. He ran the 1 1/16 miles over Cushion Track in 1:43.80.
Making his second start after a layoff of more than five months, Indian Firewater paid $5 and $3. Nextdoorneighbor, the 2-1 favorite, finished 2 ½ lengths behind Indian Firewater and paid $2.80 to show.
Saint Paul, the pacesetter who was seeking his third win in his last four outings, weakened to fourth. He was followed by Unusual Smoke and Spring Forth. Oilisblackgold, Gold Star Status and Turf and Sky were scratched.
There were 19 perfect tickets in the Pick Six. Each was worth $12,821. A total of $340,981 was wagered Friday into the Pick Six in pursuit of a $54,223 carryover.
Racing continues Saturday. Post time is 1 p.m.
The main event is the $150,000 Oak Tree Derby. A Grade III at 1 1/8 miles on turf, the Derby lured eight 3-year-olds.
Make Music For Me, who won the Pasadena Stakes March 6 at Santa Anita in his lone start on turf, is the 5-2 morning line favorite.
There is also a Zenyatta giclee picture giveaway. The item is available per paid admission – while supplies last – to Gold Club and Thoroughbreds members.
