INGLEWOOD, Calif. (May 23, 2013)—Stretching out for the first time in nearly a year, Marinda was successful for Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella, winning the $56,074 feature Thursday at Betfair Hollywood Park.
Positioned perfectly throughout by leading jockey Rafael Bejarano, Marinda, the 8-5 favorite in the field of 12, won for the second time in eight starts and increased her earnings to $112,910.
Owned by breeder Ran Jan Racing, Inc., the 4-year-old daughter of Scat Daddy and the Soft Gold mare Bella Bella Bella completed the one mile on turf in 1:35.05. She paid $5.20, $4.40 and $3.
Content to sit third while Sweet Assay and Fantastic Mizz disputed the pace, Marinda moved up outside to engage for the lead early in the stretch, got the advantage with less than an eighth of a mile to run and went on to the 1 ¼ length score.
It was Marinda’s first race beyond 6 ½ furlongs since she finished third against maidens – when trained by Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer – in a mile turf affair last June 8.
Foxy Boss, an 18-1 shot, gained second after a ground-saving trip, 1 ½ lengths in front of the Mandella-trained Dinvar Diva, who rallied from last under jockey Julien Leparoux.
In her first race since defeating maidens March 31 at Santa Anita, Foxy Boss returned $15 and $9.40 while the show price on Dinvar Diva was $6.60. Completing the order of finish were Villeneuve, Toomanytomatoes, Boller Bomb, Fantastic Mizz, Miss Well Molded, Candy Trophy, Sweet Assay, Bound for Eden and Special Charm.
The defending Spring/Summer champion, Bejarano also won the eighth race with 8-1 shot Only the Gold, so he holds a 26-20 lead over Joe Talamo through 17 days of the 49-day season.
Racing resumes Friday. Post time is 1 p.m.
The 18th day of the Spring/Summer meet also marks the fifth Fiesta Friday. There will be Mexican food and drink specials between 2-4 p.m. and Gold Club members can enter to win a $100 mutuel voucher.
