INGLEWOOD, Calif. (August 2, 2010)—Lookin At Lucky added to the 3-year-old successes of former Hollywood CashCall Futurity participants with a runaway victory in the $1 million Haskell on Sunday at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J.
Clearly the top 3-year-old in training, the son of Smart Strike, who is owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman and trained by Bob Baffert, dominated a field that included Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver.
In his first start since a narrow victory in the Preakness Stakes on May 15, Lookin At Lucky won for the eighth time in 11 starts and increased his earnings to $2,713,000. It was a record fourth Haskell victory for Baffert. The Hall of Fame trainer’s other victories in the race came with Roman Ruler (2005), War Emblem (2002) and Point Given (2001).
Like Lookin At Lucky, Point Given was also a winner of the Futurity, having taken the Grade 1 in 2000.
Besides Point Given, who also won the Preakness and Belmont in 2001, other Futurity winners who have scored important victories the following year include Pioneerof the Nile, who won the 2009 Santa Anita Derby, 2006 Santa Anita Derby winner Brother Derek, Real Quiet, who captured both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness and was a nose away from the Triple Crown in 1997 and Thunder Gulch, the winner of both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes in 1994.
Other Futurity winners who shined as a 3-year-olds include A.P. Indy, the 1992 Horse of the Year whose victories included the Santa Anita Derby, Belmont Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Classic and Best Pal, who won the 1991 Pacific Classic at Del Mar.
Alysheb finished second in the Futurity before winning both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness in 1987. Giacomo, who was the the runner-up to Declan’s Moon in the 2004 Futurity, won the Kentucky Derby as a 50-1 shot the following year.
The Hollywood CashCall Futurity will be run for the 30th time later this year. Hollywood Park’s Autumn meet will begin on Nov. 4 and continue through Dec. 19.
