INGLEWOOD, Calif. (November 21, 2013)—Apprentice jockey Drayden VanDyke earned the first win of his career as he guided Money Clip, a pick-up mount, to a last-to-first victory in Thursday’s sixth race at Betfair Hollywood Park.

The half-length victory in the $45,750 contest for maidens came with the second career mount for VanDyke. The 19-year-old finished sixth aboard 13-1 outsider Two Term Leader in Sunday’s first race in his riding debut.

Both of the horses he’s been aboard in the afternoon are owned by Glen Hill Farm and trained by Tom Proctor.

“While (VanDyke) was in high school in Hot Springs (Arkansas), he came out to Churchill Downs every summer trying to get work,’’ said Proctor. “After high school, I sent him to Florida to learn. He’s here now exercising horses for me.

“He did everything I asked him to do today. The main thing right now is for him to watch and learn from the great riders around here like (Gary) Stevens and (Mike) Smith. He doesn’t have an agent, but he’ll have one real soon.’’

Hall of Famer Stevens was originally named to ride Money Clip, a 3-year-old gelded son of Afleet Alex who had finished fifth of 11 in his only previous start last Jan. 30 at Gulfstream Park.

“It felt great to get my first win,’’ said VanDyke. “This is the best experience ever. I was far back early, but I never asked him a bit. I don’t even think I hit him.
“Mr. Proctor told me to just let him settle and that’s what I did. I can’t wait to do it again. I hope I have many more.’’

The final time for the six furlongs over Cushion Track in a race originally scheduled for turf was 1:12.78. Money Clip paid $9.40 as the 7-2 second choice.
