INGLEWOOD, Calif. (March 21, 2013)—Shakin It Up, who was a close third in the Grade III Hollywood Prevue last Nov. 22 at Betfair Hollywood Park, will try for his second win of 2013 in the $800,000 Sunland Derby Sunday at Sunland Park.
A Grade III for 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles, the Sunland Derby is the 11th of 12 races. Scheduled post time is 4:08 p.m. PDT. Track gates at Betfair Hollywood Park will open at 10:15 a.m. for simulcasts.
A son of Midnight Lute and the Vindication mare Silver Bullet Moon owned by breeder Mike Pegram and Dennis Cardoza, Shakin It Up was beaten three-quarters of a length by Really Mr Greely in the Prevue, part of a 1-2-3-4 sweep for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.
In his seasonal debut, Shakin It Up won the Grade II San Vicente by one length Feb. 17 at Santa Anita. The Sunland Derby will be the dark bay colt’s first start beyond seven furlongs.
Pegram and Baffert, who won the 2006 Sunland Derby with Wanna Runner, will also be represented by Govenor Charlie. A son of Midnight Lute and the Storm Cat mare Silverbulletway, Govenor Charlie has a win in two starts. He defeated next out graduate Footbridge by a neck when stretched to a mile the same day Shakin It Up won the San Vicente. Govenor Charlie has earned $44,800 while Shakin It Up, who is 2-for-4, has banked $139,600.
