INGLEWOOD, Calif. (April 11, 2013)—Den’s Legacy, who won the Grade III Generous Stakes over the Betfair Hollywood Park turf last Nov. 24, and War Academy, a first out winner over Cushion Track last Nov. 9, are among 10 3-year-olds entered to run in the $1 million Arkansas Derby Saturday at Oaklawn Park.
A Grade I at 1 1/8 miles, the Arkansas Derby is the 10th of 12 races on the closing day program at the Hot Springs track. Scheduled post time is 3:28 p.m. PDT. Track gates at Betfair Hollywood Park will open at 10:15 a.m. for simulcasts.
Trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert for Westrock Stables LLC, Den’s Legacy won the Generous by a half-length as the 13-10 favorite before ending his 2-year-old season with a third place finish in the Grade I CashCall Futurity three weeks later.
Although winless in 2013, the son of Medaglia d’Oro and the War Chant mare Sunshine Song has not been worse than second in three starts this year. He was runner-up in both the Sham and Robert B. Lewis at Santa Anita before finishing third behind Will Take Charge and Oxbow in the Grade II Rebel Stakes in his Oaklawn debut March 16.
A Florida bred, Den’s Legacy has won two of 11 and banked $381,350.
Owned by John Magnier, Derrick Smith and Michael Tabor and trained by Baffert, War Academy won by 1 ¾ lengths in his debut at Betfair Hollywood Park. He returned to action by finishing fourth in the Grade II San Vicente Stakes Feb. 17 at Santa Anita before stretching out to 1 1/16 miles and winning by 3 ½ lengths March 15.
A Giant’s Causeway colt out of the A.P. Indy mare Cabbage Key, War Academy has earned $70,800.
