INGLEWOOD, Calif. (May 21, 2009) — Longshot Bamaha Breeze caught pacesetter Sea of Pleasure nearing the sixteenth pole and held off Euroglide by a neck to score an upset victory in Thursday’s $72,300 El Segundo Stakes under jockey Martin Garcia at Hollywood Park.
Bamaha Breeze, a winner of his first five starts before suffering defeats in his final two races a year ago, was overlooked at 12-1 while making his 2009 debut after a layoff of almost six months.
The 4-year-old son of Lord Carson covered five furlongs on the Lakeside Turf Course in :55.13 to earn his sixth win. He paid $26, $11.20 and $6.20, while Euroglide returned $5.40 and $3.80. The show payoff on Sea of Pleasure was $4.80.
Bamaha Breeze, trained by Steve Miyadi, has not finished worse than third in eight starts. The winner’s check of $47,460 boosted his earnings to $171,120.
Rafael Bejarano rode three winners Thursday to move into a tie with Joel Rosario atop the jockeys’ standings with 31 victories.
Garica rode a pair of winners — his eighth and ninth — while leading trainer Doug O’Neill saddled his 14th and 15th winners of the meeting.
