INGLEWOOD, Calif. (June 22, 2012)—Boat Trip remained undefeated on turf, winning the $74,330 Tsunami Slew Stakes (video) Friday night at Betfair Hollywood Park.
Trained by Mike Pender for owners James Hirschmann III and B.J. Wright, the 3-year-old Harlan’s Holiday colt stretched out successfully after consecutive sprint victories March 24 at Santa Anita and over the local grass May 4.
Content to track the pace for most of the journey, Boat Trip, the 2-1 favorite, took the lead from 2-1 second choice Chips All In inside the final sixteenth and held off the late bid by Unusual Heatwave. The margin of victory was a half-length for the bay, who is out of the Seeking the Gold mare Turning Wheel.
Ridden by Jose Valdivia, Jr., Boat Trip completed the mile in 1:34.68. In his only previous try at the distance, the Kentucky bred was fourth against maidens on the Santa Anita main track last Dec. 30.
Winning for the third time in seven starts, Boat Trip increased his earnings to $119,130. He paid $6.40, $4 and $3.20.
The Tsunami Slew win was the first in a stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park for Valdivia since his 9-1 upset aboard Rail Trip in the 2009 Hollywood Gold Cup.
Last for about seven furlongs, Unusual Heatwave, who won the Snow Chief Stakes versus California breds over Cushion Track April 28, finished well in the center of the course under leading jockey Rafael Bejarano.
The Unusual Heat colt returned $3.80 and $2.60 while finishing one length in front of 10-1 shot Canuletmedowneasy. The show price on Canuletmedowneasy, who had a two race turf win streak snapped, was $4.80. Chips All In was a nose back in fourth. Tiz Point and pacesetter Tones completed the order of finish.
Racing will resume Saturday. Post time is 1 p.m. Track gates at Betfair Hollywood Park will open at 9:55 a.m. for simulcasts.
The feature attraction of the nine race program is the $150,000 Hollywood Oaks.
A Grade II for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles over Cushion Track, the Oaks drew eight entrants, including Grade I winners Eden’s Moon, Killer Graces and Willa B Awesome. The Hollywood Oaks is the eighth race.
