INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Dec. 2, 2009) — Briecat, upset winner at odds of 13-1 a year ago, will try to repeat in Saturday’s wide open $150,000 Bayakoa Handicap at Hollywood Park.

Briecat, who faded to seventh behind Zenyatta after setting the pace in the Lady’s Secret at Santa Anita Park in October, finished second to Zenyatta while making her last Hollywood Park start in the Grade I Vanity Handicap in June.

She won her only other two starts here, including a victory over fillies and mares in the 1 1/16-mile Bayakoa in 2008.

Briecat, who will be ridden by Martin Garcia for trainer Vladimir Cerin, drew the ten-post in a field of 11 for the 28th running of the Grade II Bayakoa, which lines up as follows form the rail out:

Czechers, with Danny Sorenson up, carries 114 pounds; Zardana, Victor Espinoza, 115; Silver Swallow, Mike Smith, 114; Cat by the Tale, Joel Rosario, 114; Eissoai, Goncalino Almeida, 113; Floating Heart, Joe Talamo, 112; Teamgeist, Alex Solis, 117; Smooth Performer, Martin Pedroza, 114; Made for Magic, Omar Berrio, 114; Briecat, Garcia, 116, and Lucky Copy, Rafael Bejarano, 116.

Cat by the Tale, Teamgeist and Zardana will each shift to the main track after finishing third, sixth and seventh, respectively, behind highly regarded Tuscan Evening in the Las Palmas Handicap at Santa Anita.

Silver Swallow, in the money in each of seven starts at Hollywood Park, finished sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. She was second in a pair of stakes here at the Spring/Summer Meet — the Desert Stormer and the A Gleam Handicap.

Floating Heart and Lucky Copy are both from the Todd Pletcher stable. The former, a 3-year-old daughter of Giant’s Causeway, has won back-to-back-allowance races at Turfway Park and Keeneland and three of six starts overall. Lucky Copy cruised to an 8 1/2-length victory in a Keeneland allowance race which was taken off the turf in her most recent start.

Brazilian-bred Eissoai shifts to the main track after a third-place finish on turf in the Voo Doo Dancer at Saratoga; Smooth Performer is in good form with a pair of seconds in restricted stakes and a win in the E.B. Johnston in her last three starts; Made for Magic moves to the main track after a second in a turf allowance here Nov. 13, and Czechers won the Queen of the Green Handicap in her last start at Turf Paradise.

The Bayakoa will run as the eighth race on Saturday’s nine-race program. First post is at 12:30 p.m.
