INGLEWOOD, Calif. (August 17, 2010)—Three Hollywood Park stakes winners will get together in the $75,000 Green Flash Handicap Wednesday at Del Mar.
Headlining the field of eight in the race at five furlongs on turf is California Flag.
The easy winner of the 2008 Hollywood Turf Express, California Flag will be making his first start since he finished third as the favorite in the Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan in the United Arab Emirates on March 27.
Owned by breeder Hi Card Ranch and trained by Brian Koriner, California Flag, whose biggest victory came in the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, is the defending champion in the Green Flash. The 6-year-old gelded son of Avenue of Flags won by a neck as the 9-5 choice last Aug. 19.
With regular rider Joe Talamo sidelined with a broken wrist, Mike Smith takes over on the gray. California Flag has won eight of 18 and earned $1,104,596.
Among those scheduled to challenge California Flag are Cost Of Freedom and My Summer Slew.
The winner of the Los Angeles Handicap on June 5 at Hollywood Park, Cost of Freedom will be making his first start on turf. The 7-year-old, who is owned by Gary and Cecil Barber and trained by John Sadler, was eliminated at the start when off the board as the 3-5 favorite in the Bing Crosby Handicap on Aug. 1.
Owned and bred by Nick Cafarchia and trained by Craig Dollase, My Summer Slew is making his first appearance since winning the Robert K. Kerlan Memorial Handicap on June 27 at Hollywood Park. The California bred, who has won three of four on turf, will again be ridden by Alsono Quinonez.
