INGLEWOOD, Calif. (August 10, 2012)—Cambina and Nereid, the principals in a historic renewal of the American Oaks in 2011 at Betfair Hollywood Park, will square off again in the $250,000 John C. Mabee Stakes Sunday at Del Mar.
A Grade II for older fillies and mares at 1 1/8 miles on turf, the Mabee is the eighth of nine races. Post time Sunday is 2:05 p.m. Track gates at Betfair Hollywood Park will open at 10 a.m. for simulcasts.
Cambina and Nereid finished on even terms in the Oaks, the first dead heat in a Grade I at Betfair Hollywood Park since the Richard Mandella-trained duo of Reluctant Guest and Beautiful Melody could not be separated in the 1990 Beverly Hills Handicap.
Owned by a partnership and trained by Jeff Bonde, Cambina was defeated by a nose by favored Capital Plan in the Beverly Hills in her most recent start June 24. An Irish bred daughter of Hawk Wing and the Peintre Celebre mare Await, the 4-year-old has won six of 20 and earned $448,426.
Trained by John Shirreffs for owner Eric Kronfeld, Nereid is adding blinkers as she seeks her first win since the American Oaks. The 4-year-old Rock Hard Ten filly out of the Belong to Me mare Dowry has won three of nine and banked $253,800.
Bred in Kentucky by Mr. and Mrs. Emier Neuman, Nereid started three times during the Spring/Summer meet at Betfair Hollywood Park. She finished fourth in both the Wilshire Handicap and Royal Heroine Mile and sixth in the Grade I Gamely Stakes.
From inside out, the field for the 55th John C. Mabee: All Star Heart, Brice Blanc rides, 119 pounds; Imperialistic Diva, Patrick Valenzuela, 119; Cambina, Garrett Gomez, 121; Nereid, Joe Talamo, 121; Go Forth North, David Flores, 119 and City to City, Corey Nakatani, 121.
