INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Nov. 19, 2009) — Loup Breton, who trailed the field most of the way, split horses in mid-stretch while taking command under jockey Garrett Gomez to win Thursday’s $46,000 allowance feature at Hollywood Park in his North American debut.

The Irish-bred, French-raced horse covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:46.87 on the Lakeside Turf Course to win for the fourth time in 19 starts. He prevailed by 1 ¾ lengths over Porfido under a hand ride by Gomez. Tres Borrachos finished third, while Yorktown encountered traffic problems in the stretch and was fourth in the field of six older horses.

Loup Breton, a Group winner overseas, went off as the odds-on favorite and paid $3.60, $2.80 and $2.20. Porfido returned $5 and $3.20, while the show payoff on Tres Borrachos was $3.40.

Loup Breton, a 5-year-old, arrived in the U.S. in October from the stable of French trainer Elie Lellouche. He is now trained by Julio Canani, a long-time friend of Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel, who passed away Monday from lymphoma. Porfido was entered in Frankel’s name, but was saddled and officially ran under the name of his long-time assistant Humberto Ascanio.

The winner’s share of $46,400 boosted Loup Breton’s earnings to $575,308.

Gomez and Martin Garcia each rode a pair of winners, while Mike Mitchell saddled back-to-back winners. In the nightcap, Los Alamitos regular Maggie Carter notched her first Hollywood Park win aboard 55-1 shot Company Secret ($114.80) for trainer Rafael Martinez.
