INGLEWOOD, Calif. (November 11, 2010)—Making his first start since finishing seventh in the Preakness May 15, Caracortado was extremely impressive in his turf debut in the $55,504 feature Thursday at Hollywood Park.

Caracortado was one of five non favorites to win in the Pick Six races, so there will be a carryover of $54,204.98 when racing resumes Friday. Post time is 7:05 p.m. The Pick Six begins in the third race.

Under new rider Joe Talamo, Caracortado, a 3-year-old Cat Dreams gelding and the Maria’s Mon mare Mons Venus, exploded in the final furlong to win going away in his first race against older.

Able to save ground after breaking from the rail, the 7-2 second choice swung outside for room at the top of the stretch and accelerated in the middle of the course to prevail by 1 ¾ lengths over 8-1 shot Cherokee Heaven and eight others.

Owned in partnership by Blahut Racing LLC and trainer Mike Machowsky, who also bred the chestnut in California, Caracortado ran the six furlongs in 1:07.79. It was the fastest clocking at the distance over the Hollywood Park turf since Scottsbluff set the course record of 1:07.54 July 15, 2007.

The win was the sixth in nine starts for Caracortado, whose biggest victory came in the Robert B. Lewis, a Grade II, Feb. 13 at Santa Anita. He’s earned $296,520.

Caracortado returned $9.60, $6.20 and $3.60. Cherokee Heaven paid $8 and $6.20. He finished one length in front of 3-1 favorite Amazombie. The show price on Amazombie was $3.

Sirocco Strike finished fourth, three-quarters of a length behind Amazombie, then came Stoneside, Dance With Gable, who is also trained by Machowsky, Hidden Blessing, Cape Truth, Lieve and Bradium.

After the Friday night races, a concert starring Ozomatli will begin – approximately 10:30 p.m. – at the North Park Lawn.

The feature attraction Friday is the $50,000-added Life is Sweet Stakes. Ellafitz is the 8-5 morning line choice in the race for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles over Cushion Track.
