INGLEWOOD, Calif. (September 15, 2011)—Courageous Cat and jockey Patrick Valenzuela, who combined to win the Shoemaker Mile July 2 at Hollywood Park, will try for another Grade I in the $1 million Ricoh Woodbine Mile Sunday at Woodbine.
Owned by breeders Pam and Marty Wygod and trained by Bill Mott, Courageous Cat has been idle since defeating Caracortado by a neck in the Shoemaker. The win was the third in five attempts at the distance on turf. Overall, Courageous Cat has won six of 13 and earned $961,300.
A victory would be the second in the Woodbine Mile for Valenzuela, who scored with Becrux in 2006.
The Mile is the 10th of 11 races Sunday. Scheduled post time is 2:42 p.m. PDT. Track gates at Hollywood Park open at 10:30 a.m. for simulcasts.
Jockey Garrett Gomez, who will be aboard Right One, will be seeking his third win in the race in the last five years. Gomez followed a victory with Shakespeare in 2007 with another on the mare Ventura in 2009.
