INGLEWOOD, Calif. (June 14, 2012)—The lone female in a field of nine, Diamond Duchess wore down pacesetter and 5-2 favorite Danderek in the final yards to win the $53,400 feature (video) Thursday at Betfair Hollywood Park.
Dismissed at 10-1, Diamond Duchess won for the second time in as many starts over the Betfair Hollywood Park grass. The Irish bred, who is owned by Red Baron’s Barn LLC and Vayaconsuerte LLC and trained by Darrell Vienna, had captured a $25,000 claimer – against her own sex – May 18.
Stretched to 1 ½ miles Thursday, the daughter of Dubawi and the Shahrastani mare saved ground while basically splitting the field for most of the journey, swung outside for a clear run entering the stretch and was up in time under jockey Edwin Maldonado.
Making her first start at the distance, Diamond Duchess ran the 12 furlongs in 2:29.94 while winning by 1 ½ lengths. She paid $22.40, $10.20 and $6.60. A winner twice at 1 ¼ miles in England in 2010, Diamond Duchess is 5-for-17 lifetime with earnings of $77,458.
A gate-to-wire winner at 10 furlongs in his Betfair Hollywood Park turf debut May 17, Danderek returned $4.20 and $3.40 in his initial start for trainer Dan Blacker, who had claimed the 6-year-old gelding for $40,000 for owners Dan Capen and Gary Margolis.
Falcon Rock rallied along the inside for third, a head behind Danderek. The show price on Falcon Rock was $4.60.
Completing the order of finish were Clearance Clarence, Slane Castle, Porfido, Let’s Do It, Maker and Southern Sculptor. Smokin’ Cat, Accelerant, Lumberyard Jack and Mr. Candy Bar were scratched.
Racing resumes Friday. Post time is 7:05 p.m.
At the conclusion of the eight race program, a concert starring Jesus and Mary Chain will begin at the North Park. Approximate start time is 10:30 p.m.
