INGLEWOOD, Calif. (November 18, 2012)—Going for a Spin, the 2-second choice, rallied in the center of Cushion Track to defeat Cayanna and five other California bred females in the $78,200 Cat’s Cradle Handicap (video) Sunday at Betfair Hollywood Park.
Owned by breeders Tommy Town Thoroughbreds LLC and trained by Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer, the 4-year-old daughter of Ministers Wild Cat completed the 7 ½ furlongs in 1:31.62.
The win was the sixth in 26 starts for Going for a Spin, who was ridden by leading jockey Rafael Bejarano. Now 3-for-8 over the Betfair Hollywood Park main, the dark bay, who is out of the Mr. Greeley mare Gender Motors, has earned $301,952. She paid $6.80, $4 and $2.80
Outrun early while longshots Really Elegant and Camille C disputed the pace, Going for a Spin angled outside for the stretch run, collared Cayanna, who had gained the advantage with a sweeping move into the lane, with about a sixteenth of a mile to run and drew clear to win by 3 ¾ lengths.
“We lost her and claimed her back (for $40,000 May 24 at Betfair Hollywood Park) because she does everything: turf, main, short, long,’’ said Dan Ward, Hollendorfer’s assistant trainer. “I think this may be her best distance. I think she’s getting better all the time.
Making her second start since being claimed for $32,00 by trainer Doug O’Neill Oct. 4, Caynna, the 6-1 fourth choice, finished 1 ¼ lengths in front of Willa B Awesome. Cayanna returned $5.80 and $4 while the show price on 5-1 shot Willa B Awesome was $3.60.
The stewards conducted an inquiry for a bumping incident involving Willa B Awesome, fourth place finisher Camille C and Really Elegant, who finished fifth, but made no change.
The disappointment in the Cat’s Cradle was Sparkling Style. The 9-10 favorite finished sixth under jockey Joe Talamo. She had won three times previously over Cushion Track for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, including a pair of California bred stakes.
Racing resumes Thursday. Post time for the Thanksgiving program is 11 a.m. Track gates at Betfair Hollywood Park will open at 9:30 a.m.
The Hollywood Park Casino will be open for dark day simulcasts Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Admission is free and simulcasts begin at approximately 10:15 a.m.
