Eclipse Winner Amazombie Returns In San Carlos

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (February 22, 2012)—Amazombie, the champion sprinter of 2011, will make his 6-year-old debut in the $200,000 San Carlos Stakes Saturday at Santa Anita.

A Grade II at seven furlongs, the San Carlos is the seventh of nine races. Post time is 12:30 p.m. Track gates at Hollywood Park will open at 10:15 a.m. for simulcasts.

Owned by Thomas Sanford and trainer Bill Spawr, Amazombie has been away since he capped his Eclipse season with a neck victory in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint last Nov. 5 at Churchill Downs.

The win was the fifth in nine starts in 2011 for the gelded son of Northern Afleet and the In Excess mare Wilshe Amaze. Overall, Amazombie, who was bred in California by the late Gregg Anderson, has won 10 of 23 and earned $1,525,708.

Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, who is closing in on 5,000 career victories, will take his usual stop atop Amazombie.

Drawn directly outside of Amazombie is The Factor, who will be seeking his fourth win in five starts at Santa Anita. Owned by George Bolton and Fog City Stable and trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, The gray son of War Front and the Miswaki mare Greyciousness has won five of nine. The 4-year-old, who was last seen winning the Malibu Stakes by 3 ½ lengths Dec. 26, has banked $652,180. He is 3-for-3 at seven furlongs.
