INGLEWOOD, Calif. (April 29, 2009) — Jockey Victor Espinoza called an audible and guided 11-1 shot Candy Pull to a front-running victory in Wednesday’s $52,000 allowance feature at Hollywood Park.

Espinoza, who also rode Misremembered to victory one race earlier, planned to come from off the pace, but he let Candy Pull roll when he showed early speed. The 4-year-old gelding responded with an impressive 2 ½-length victory to snap a six-race winless streak.

Candy Pull, who is based in trainer Jesus Mendoza’s Hollywood Park stable, had a win and a third in two starts here at the 2008 Autumn Meet, but finished no better than fourth in five subsequent starts at Santa Anita.

He paid $25.40, $10.20 and $5.20 while covering six furlongs on the Lakeside Turf Course in 1:08.39. Runner-up My City by the Bay returned $7 and $4.80, while the show payoff on Quick Enough was $3.20.

Candy Pull’s victory helped set up a Pick Six carryover of $64,925 when live racing resumes on Friday afternoon at Hollywood Park. There is also a Super High Give carryover of $51,166. Post time is at 1 p.m. as Hollywood Park offers its lone Friday matinee of the meeting to accommodate the simulcast of the Kentucky Oaks.

Thursday will feature simulcast wagering only at Hollywood Park with live racing Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

First live post for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby Day program at Hollywood Park is at 11 a.m. Track gates open at 7 a.m. each day with the first import from Kentucky at 7:30 a.m.
