INGLEWOOD, Calif. (January 30, 2013)—Flashback, a stylish debut winner Dec. 8 at Betfair Hollywood Park, will step into a stakes Saturday at Santa Anita when he takes on three other 3-year-olds in the $200,000 Robert B. Lewis.
A Grade II at 1 1/16 miles, the Lewis is a prep for the upcoming Santa Anita Derby. It is the fourth of 10 races on a card that also includes the Grade II, $200,000 Strub Stakes and the Grade II, $150,000 Arcadia Stakes. Post time at Santa Anita is 12:30 p.m. Track gates at Betfair Hollywood Park will open at 10:15 a.m. for simulcasts.
Owned by Gary and Mary West and trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, Flashback won by 3 ½ lengths as the even-money favorite, completing seven furlongs over Cushion Track in 1:23.09.
A gray son of Tapit and the Mr. Greeley mare Rhumb Line – making him a full brother to multiple stakes winner Zazu -, Flashback earned $27,000 for the win. He has worked well for his 2013 debut, including a best of the morning five furlongs in 59 2/5 Jan. 28.
Wilkinson, who won the Grade II American Handicap when 44-1 last May 26 at Betfair Hollywood Park in his first start for trainer Jeff Mullins, is part of a large field in the Arcadia.
A 5-year-old son of Lemon Drop Kid out of the Afternoon Deelites mare, Wilkinson has won five of 19 and earned $338,994. He’s owned by E.K. Gaylord II.
The co-highweights (123 pounds) in the Strub are recent San Fernando winner Fed Biz and Handsome Mike, who won the Grade II Pennsylvania Derby for owner J. Paul Reddam and trainer Doug O’Neill last Sept. 22 at Parx.
