INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Dec. 4, 2009) — Free Flying Soul, third in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint in her previous start, cruised to a two-length victory under Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith in Friday’s $51,200 Winter Stakes at Hollywood Park.
Free Flying Soul, a 4-year-old filly owned by Marsha Naify and trained by Bruce Headley, set all the fractions while covering six furlongs in 1:09.01 on Cushion Track to win for the fourth time in nine starts.
Gritty 5-year-old mare Reba Is Tops finished second under Danny Sorenson, while Empressive Lady was another three-quarters of a length back in third with Victor Espinoza up.
Free Flying Soul, the even-money favorite, paid $4.20, $3.20 and $2.40. Reba Is Tops returned $5.60 and $3.60, while the show payoff on Empressive Lady was $4.
The winner’s share of $30,720 increased Free Flying Soul’s earnings to $245,346.
Smith and Victor Espinoza each rode two winners on the card, while trainer David Hofmans sent out two winners.
