INGLEWOOD, Calif. (May 8, 2009) — Second-choice Giant Gem prevailed by a nose in a three-horse blanket finish to win Friday night’s $50,000 allowance feature under jockey Alex Solis at Hollywood Park.
Giant Gem, a 4-year-old son of Giant’s Causeway, split horses in deep stretch to post his second win in five starts, narrowly defeating stablemate Cavanal and Woodland Flood while covering one mile on the Lakeside Turf Course in 1:34.54.
Hall of Fame trainer Neil Drysdale saddled the first two finishers as Cavanal was a nose in front of Woodland Flood with favorite Corona Time just another three-quarters of a length back in fourth following a poor start.
Giant’s Gem paid $9, $5.20 and $3.20. Cavanal, ridden by Rafael Bejarano, returned $5.80 and $3.80, while the show payoff Woodland Flood with Victor Espinoza up was $3.80.
Giant’s Gem banked $30,000 to boost his earnings to $73,520.
