INGLEWOOD, Calif. (June 12, 2009) — Golden Rocketship got up in the final stride under Rafael Bejarano to win Friday night’s $48,000 allowance feature at Hollywood Park by a nose over pacesetter Dancing Erin.
Golden Rocketship, owned by Dave and Herb Alpert, stalked the pacesetter and looked beaten early in the stretch, but gradually wore down the leader in the final sixteenth while covering six furlongs on Cushion Track in 1:08.77.
Even-money favorite Unzip Me moved into contention on the turn for home, but tired in the stretch and had to settle for third, just one of several upsets Friday which set up a Pick Six carryover of $83,719.
Golden Rocketship, a 3-year-old chestnut trained by John Sadler, paid $9.60, $4.50 and $3 as the second choice in the field of seven 3- and 4-year-old fillies. Dancing Erin, a 17-1 outsider, returned $17.20 and $5.80, while the show payoff on Unzip Me was $2.20.
The winner’s share of $28,800 raised Golden Rocketship’s earnings to $58,760. The win was her second in six starts.
