INGLEWOOD, Calif. (January 12, 2012)—Third behind So Brilliant and Brother Francis in the Grade III Hollywood Prevue Nov. 24 at Hollywood Park, Hodge will try more distance in the $100,000 California Derby Saturday at Golden Gate Fields.

Scheduled for 1 1/16 miles over Tapeta, the Cal Derby is the eighth of nine races. Post time Saturday is 12:45 p.m. Track gates at Hollywood Park will open at 10:15 a.m. for simulcasts.

Owned by a partnership that includes Arbitrage Stable, Lo Hi Stable and Nick Casato and trained by Mike Machowsky, Hodge was defeated by 1 ¾ lengths in the seven-furlong Prevue.

A gray son of City Place and the Black Tie Affair mare Tarahumara, Hodge has one win in three outings and has earned $39,350.

Another of the seven 3-year-olds in the lineup who made their last start at Hollywood Park is Senor Rain.

Trained by Peter Miller for owners Gary and Cecil Barber, the El Nino gelding out of the Marquetry mare Make My Marq was pulled up after a much troubled first turn in the Grade III Generous Stakes – on turf – Nov. 27.

An Indiana bred, Senor Rain had finished third in the Real Quiet 15 days earlier in his Cushion Track debut. Scheduled to race without blinkers for the first time in his career, Senor Rain has won two of seven and earned $73,416.

From inside out, the field for the 97th California Derby: Senor Rain, Kevin Krigger rides, 116 pounds; Hodge, Russell Baze, 116; Unveiled Heat, Abel Cedillo, 116; Cahill Chrome, Juan Hernandez, 119; Blacky the Bull, Kerwin John, 116; Russian Greek, Aaron Gryder, 122 and Reconstruction, Frank Alvarado, 116.
