INGLEWOOD, Calif. (November 14, 2013)—Curvy Cat, who won the B. Thoughtful Stakes during the Spring/Summer meet, will try for her eighth career victory in the $100,000 Cat’s Cradle Handicap Sunday at Betfair Hollywood Park.
Restricted to older fillies and mares sired or bred in California, the Cat’s Cradle, which is the third of nine races, is run at 7 ½ furlongs over Cushion Track. Post time Sunday at Betfair Hollywood Park is 12:30 p.m. Track gates will open at 9:55 a.m. for simulcasts.
Owned by breeders Tom and Debi Stull’s Tommy Town Thoroughbreds, Curvy Cat, who was nearly 7-1 when she won the B. Thoughtful during the California Gold Rush program April 27, has banked $272,425 in 20 starts.
Since that one-length victory, the 4-year-old daughter of Ministers Wild Cat and the Distorted Humor mare Curvy Girl has lost five in a row, including a fifth-place finish in the Bangles and Beads Sept. 20 at the Barretts Race Meet at Fairplex.
Curvy Cat is trained by Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer, who will also saddle Sister Kate. Hollendorfer, who teamed with Tommy Town to win the 2012 Cat’s Cradle with Going for a Spin, is trying to become the third trainer to win the race in consecutive years.
Hall of Famer Richard Mandella won the first two runnings with Supercilious (1997-1998) while John Dolan scored with Cris the Swimmer (1999) and Lazy Slusan (2000).
A full sister to multiple graded stakes winner Brother Derek, Sister Kate will be making her first start at Betfair Hollywood Park since finishing fifth in the Grade II Marjorie L. Everett Handicap May 18.
Owned by breeder Mary H. Caldwell, the 5-year-old gray daughter of Benchmark and the Siyah Kalem mare Miss Soft Sell has won six of 20 and earned $270,186.
Ciao Bella Luna, who was second in the Railbird and fourth in the Grade II Hollywood Oaks earlier in the year, returns to California after finishing fourth in the Grade II Raven Run Oct. 19 at Keeneland.
Trained by Peter Miller for Rockingham Ranch, the 3-year-old Tribal Rule filly out of the Conquistador Cielo mare Shadow of the Moon has won three of nine and earned $181,110.
Craig Lewis, who trained 2003 Cat’s Cradle winner Valentine Dancer, will be represented by Warren’s Veneda.
A 3-year-old Affirmative filly out of the Flying Continental mare More Cal Bread, Warren’s Veneda has won four of nine and earned $222,064 for owner-breeder Benjamin C. Warren.
Winner of the Alphabet Kisses on Gold Rush Day in her lone start over Cushion Track, the chestnut comes off a 7 ¼ length victory in an optional claimer Oct. 13 at Santa Anita.
Qiaona goes turf to synthetic after finishing seventh of 11 in the Grade III Sen. Ken Maddy Nov. 2.
Owned by Curt and Lila Lanning and trained by Ed Moger, Jr., the daughter of Wilko and the Skywalker mare Starlet Sky has four wins in 16 starts and earnings of $440,244.
