INGLEWOOD, Calif. (August 9, 2010)—Continuing a trend, J P’s Gusto followed his victory in the Hollywood Juvenile Championship on July 5 with another graded stakes victory in the $150,000 Best Pal Stakes Sunday at Del Mar.
Owned by Gem Inc. and trained by David Hofmans, the 2-year-old son of Successful Appeal became the fourth Hollywood Juvenile winner in the last six years to repeat in the Best Pal.
Besides J P’s Gusto, who has won three of four – he also won the Willard L. Proctor Memorial at Hollywood Park prior to the Juvenile – the others who swept both races are Azul Leon (2008), Salute The Sarge and What a Song (2005).
With regular rider Joe Talamo sidelined due to a broken wrist suffered in a spill a few days earlier, Patrick Valenzuela directed J P’s Gusto the wire-to-wire victory. The win in the Grade II was the first in a stakes in California for Valenzuela since his score aboard Curiously Sweet in the 2007 Cat’s Cradle Handicap at Hollywood Park.
