INGLEWOOD, Calif. (February 9, 2012)—Sanagas, a decisive winner of the Grade I Hollywood Turf Cup (video) in his California debut last Nov. 19, will make his first start of 2012 in the $150,000 San Marcos Stakes Saturday at Santa Anita.
A Grade II for 4-year-olds & up at 1 ¼ miles on turf, the San Marcos is the ninth of 10 races. Post time Saturday is 12:30 p.m. Track gates at Hollywood Park will open at 10:15 a.m. for simulcasts.
A 3 ½ length winner as the 8-5 favorite in the Turf Cup, Sanagas has since been sold privately and will make his first start for BC3 Thoroughbreds and David Bernsen and trainer Peter Miller in the San Marcos.
A 6-year-old gelded son of Lomitas and the Marju mare Scota, Sanagas, who was bred in Germany, has earned $282,292 while winning seven of 10. He will be ridden for the first time by Joel Rosario.
The field also includes Turf Cup runner-up and defending San Marcos champion Bourbon Bay. A winner of five of six starts over the Santa Anita grass, Bourbon Bay will be seeking his eighth lifetime win for David and Jill Heerensperger and Hall of Fame trainer Neil Drysdale. The 6-year-old Sligo Bay gelding has banked $779,536 in 23 starts.
