INGLEWOOD, Calif. (May 19, 2012)—I’ll Have Another, who is stabled at Betfair Hollywood Park, moved one step closer to the Triple Crown after a thrilling victory over Bodemeister, another Southern California-based 3-year-old, in the Preakness Stakes Saturday at Pimlico.
A Kentucky bred son of Flower Alley and the Arch mare Arch’s Gal Edith, I’ll Have Another followed his Kentucky Derby upset two weeks earlier at Churchill Downs with a narrow win as the 3-1 second choice.
Trained by Doug O’Neill, who has won 10 training titles at Betfair Hollywood Park, and owned by J. Paul Reddam, the sponsor of the Grade I CashCall Futurity which is run annually during the Autumn meet, I’ll Have Another has won four in a row in 2012.
By virtue of his win in Maryland, I’ll Have Another became the first horse to complete the Kentucky Derby-Preakness double since Big Brown in 2008.
Both I’ll Have Another and Creative Cause, who finished third in the all California trifecta, were first out winners at Betfair Hollywood Park in 2011. I’ll Have Another won last July 3, 13 days before Creative Cause debuted.
I’ll Have Another will try to make history and become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978 when he travels to Elmont, N.Y. for the Belmont Stakes June 9 at Belmont Park.
