The second week of the Spring/Summer season begins Thursday, May 3. Post time is 1 p.m.
There are three stakes races on the May 5 card at Betfair Hollywood Park, topped by the $150,000 Mervyn LeRoy Handicap, the first prep for the $500,000 Hollywood Gold Cup, which will be run for the 73rd time July 7.
Besides the Grade II LeRoy, which is for older horses at 1 1/16 miles over Cushion Track, the other stakes to be offered are the $100,000 Senorita, a Grade III for 3-year-old fillies at one mile on turf and the $70,000-added Cool Frenchy for 3-year-olds & up at five furlongs.
The 13 nominees for the LeRoy include 2011 champion older male Acclamation, 2010 Hollywood Gold Cup winner Awesome Gem, 2011 Carter Handicap winner Morning Line and Kettle Corn, who is 2-for-2 over Cushion Track.
Among the 14 nominees to the Senorita are the undefeated Bobina, 2011 Miesque runner-up Starship Flare and Belle Passe, who has won both of her starts in the United States for trainer Peter Eurton. Smiling Tiger, a multiple Grade I winner, tops the 18 nominated to the Cool Frenchy.
Entries for the Mervyn LeRoy, Senorita and Cool Frenchy and the rest of the May 5 program will be taken Wednesday, May 2.
The Kentucky Derby Day festivities will also include the Derby Dream Contest, where the fan that comes closest to picking the correct order of finish in the Kentucky Derby will win $1,000, and the start of the Triple Crown Challenge. This is a free contest where fans receive four selections in the Derby. If they have the winner among those picks, they will advance to the Preakness two weeks later.
