INGLEWOOD, Calif. (June 5, 2009) — Strawberry Tart, a 13-1outsider, rallied in the middle of the course under jockey Martin Garcia to post a 2 1/2-length victory over Jehan in Friday night’s $87,335 Manhattan Beach Stakes at Hollywood Park.
The upset helped setup a Pick Six carryover of $89,027.
Strawberry Tart, seventh in the field of eight 3-year-old fillies on the backstretch, moved into contention six-wide turning for home. The daughter of Atticus took control in the final sixteenth while covering six furlongs on the Lakeside Turf Course in 1:08.70.
The victory was the third in five starts for Strawberry Tart, who was making her first start on turf. She paid $29, $15.60 and $7.40. Jehan returned $8.80 and $6, while the show payoff on Fastongrass was $4.80.
