Macias, Skipshot Top Field Of 10 In Barrera Stakes

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (May 19, 2010)-Skipshot, who finished fifth in the Santa Anita Derby in his first start in Southern California on April 3, will try a shorter distance in the $100,000 Lazaro S. Barrera Memorial Stakes on Saturday at Hollywood Park.

Owned by Olympia Star Incorporated and trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Skipshot will face nine other 3-year-olds in the Grade III at seven furlongs on Cushion Track.

A son of the recently deceased Skip Away and the Sunny’s Halo mare Heavenly Note, Skipshot finished 7 ¾ lengths behind Sidney’s Candy in the Santa Anita Derby while defeating half the field.

A $120,000 purchase as a 2-year-old, Skipshot won three of six in Northern California prior to his Grade 1 debut. He was off the board in two of his first three races, then won three in succession at Golden Gate Fields between Jan. 31-March 14.

With earnings of $71,030, Skipshot will be ridden by Rafael Bejarano and will carry 119 pounds.

In terms of victories, Macias is the most accomplished member of the Barrera field.

Trained by Bob Baffert for Ahmed Zayat, the Purge colt out of the Tropular mare Azeina has won four times in eight starts while earning $167,597.

Macias will be making his first appearance of 2010 on something other than turf. In his most recent main track effort, Macias was fourth in the Hollywood Prevue, a Grade III, last Nov. 21. His first two victories came on the Pro Ride at Santa Anita, including a neck win in the Jack Goodman last Oct. 31.

Macias, who will be ridden by David Flores, will carry top weight of 123 pounds.

Baffert, who is looking for his first win in the Barrera, is also scheduled to start Concord Point.

A gray son of Tapit and the Boston Harbor mare Harve de Grace owned by Kaleem Shah, Concord Point has won twice in three races, banking $56,750. He will be making his Hollywood Park debut. Martin Garcia has the mount and Concord Point will carry 117.

Fresh off a sharp third place finish in the Harry Henson on turf in his first race of the year, Smiling Tiger will switch to the main in search of his third lifetime win.

Trained by Jeff Bonde for owners Philip Lebherz and Alan Klein, the son of Hold That Tiger and the Cahill Road mare Shandra Smiles has not been worse than third in his five race career. An earner of $123,864, Smiling Tiger is seeking his initial score in a graded stakes. In 2009, he was third in both the Best Pal, a Grade II, and the Del Mar Futurity, a Grade 1. Victor Espinoza will ride and the chestnut will carry 121.

Working Capital, claimed out of a victory against $40,000 California bred maidens on March 13 by trainer Doug O’Neill, will shorten up in distance for the Barrera. He was second behind heavily-favored Alphie’s Bet in the $200,000 Snow Chief Stakes at nine furlongs on April 24.

Big Man Has A Sign, who has one win in four starts for trainer Julio Canani, will be making his first start on Cushion Track after finishing fourth in the Henson, Dixie Trouper is also switching surfaces after checking in sixth in the Henson while Domonation is returning to the scene of his lone win after a fourth place finish in a Santa Anita allowance on April 14.

The field is completed by Hawaiian Springs, a well-beaten third by the promising Golden Itiz in his first race in more than three months for trainer Kathy Walsh on April 28 and Mr Tokyo, who finished third in the Snow Chief.
