INGLEWOOD, Calif. (June 23, 2011)—Malibu Pier will stretch to the distance of her last victory when she faces five other fillies and mares in the $100,000 Beverly Hills Handicap Sunday at Hollywood Park.

A Grade III at 1 ¼ miles on turf, the Beverly Hills is the eighth of nine races. Post time Sunday is 1 p.m.

Owned by breeder B. Wayne Hughes’ Spendthrift Farm LLC and trained by Carla Gaines, Malibu Pier won the Grade II Santa Barbara Handicap April 16 at Santa Anita in her debut at 10 furlongs.

Fifth of eight in the Grade I Gamely Stakes May 30 in her first appearance of the Spring/Summer meet, the 4-year-old Malibu Moon filly out of the Lomitas mare Blue Moon has won five of 10, earning $347,200. She is 1-for-3 over the Hollywood Park grass with her win coming in her debut at six furlongs last July 15.

Trainer John Sadler, who has won the Beverly Hills two of the last three years – both victories courtesy of Black Mamba in 2008 and 2009 – will be represented by Cozi Rosie in 2011.

Owned by breeders Jerry and Ann Moss, the 4-year-old Pleasantly Perfect filly out of the Golden Fleece mare Felidia has won four of 11, banking $307,280.

She was second, a half-length behind Malibu Pier, in the Santa Barbara, then was third as the 19-10 favorite in the Gamely.

Restless Soul finished directly behind Cozi Rosie in the Gamely and will be seeking to end a nine race losing streak Sunday. Owned by Matthew Cioros and trained by Hall of Famer Neil Drysdale, the 7-year-old daughter of Singspiel and the Prince Rupert mare Seasonal Splendor hasn’t won since taking the Yerba Buena April 4, 2009 at Golden Gate Fields.

The English bred has three wins in 31 lifetime starts with earnings of $239,911. She was third, 2 ¼ lengths behind winner Turning Top, in the 2010 Beverly Hills when trained by Ben Cecil.

Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella, who has four victories in the Beverly Hills, will send out Timezone.

Owned by breeder Claiborne Farm, the 4-year-old Pulpit filly and the Unbridled mare Time Clock was seventh in the Harold C. Ramser, Sr. Handicap last Oct. 17 in her only previous appearance in a graded race. She has three wins in seven outings and a bankroll of $107,280.
Mandella’s last Beverly Hills victory was with Virginie in 1999. That win was preceded by Corrazona (1994) and the dead heat of his duo Beautiful Melody and Reluctant Guest in 1990.

Drysdale’s second entrant is First Settler. Owned by Charles Winner, the 4-year-old daughter of War Chant and the Machiavellian mare Cold Cold Woman was fifth in the restricted Redondo Beach Stakes June 5. This will be her first start in a graded event. The Kentucky bred has won three of 10 and earned $101,106.

Another 4-year-old making her initial appearance in a graded race is Streamline Baby. A California bred daughter of Ferrari and the Fruition mare Deep Intrigue, Streamline Baby comes off a state bred allowance victory May 26. She is owned by breeder Charlotte Wrather, Chris Wrather and J.F. Ernenwein and trained by Darrell Vienna. Streamline Baby is 2-for-7 with earnings of $74,220.

From inside out, the field for the Beverly Hills Handicap: Malibu Pier, Brice Blanc rides, 119 pounds; First Settler, Tyler Baze, 114; Timezone, Mike Smith, 112; Cozi Rosie, Joel Rosario, 120; Restless Soul, Joe Talamo, 114 and Streamline Baby, Martin Garcia, 110.
