INGLEWOOD, Calif. (November 7, 2010)—Stretching out in her first start in more than two months, May Day Rose rolled to a gate-to-wire victory in the $100,000 Sharp Cat Stakes Sunday at Hollywood Park.
Idle since a half-length maiden win going 5 ½ furlongs Sept. 4 at Del Mar, May Day Rose, the 2-1 second choice, quickly established the advantage, disposed of favored Big Tiz and went on to win by a Sharp Cat record 4 ¼ lengths. The previous best was Foxy Danseur’s 2 ¾ length victory in 2007.
Owned by Kaleem Shah and trained by Bob Baffert, the 2-year-old daughter of Rockport Harbor and the Pine Bluff mare May Day Bluff has won two of three and earned $100,000.
Ridden by Martin Garcia, May Day Rose, who was bred in Florida by Bridlewood Farm, ran the 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.39. She paid $6.80, $4 and $2.60.
Making her first start since finishing fifth in the Oak Leaf, a Grade I, Oct. 3, True Way of Grace rallied from last in the field of six to gain second, a half-length in front of Big Tiz, the 8-5 choice. True Way of Grace returned $6.40 and $2.80. The show price on Big Tiz, the only Sharp Cat entrant who had won previously at the distance, was $2.40.
Darling Ciana, the longest shot in the lineup at 16-1, was fourth, a half-length behind Big Tiz, then came Wallstreeter and Teddy’s Promise.
“When she sprinted she just got to the lead and kept going the same pace,’’ said Garcia. “She was a little bit rank, like babies usually are because they don’t know how to run.
“We’ve been making her finish in the mornings and look at the results today. I think she’s always wanted a distance. She’s got a really long stride. I think she’s going to be a good filly. From 5 ½ furlongs to go a mile and one sixteenth is really a big difference.
“But you know Bob Baffert, he’s such a class trainer and he knows what he’s doing.’’
Winning tickets in the Pick Six were each worth $19,370. An additional $455,420 was wagered Sunday in pursuit of a $57,067 carryover.
Racing resumes Thursday. Post time is 12:30 p.m.
Hollywood Park will be open for simulcasting Wednesday. Gates open at 10:15 a.m.a
