INGLEWOOD, Calif. (May 5, 2010)-The second longest shot in the field at 12-1, Miss Pleasant led throughout to win the seventh race on Wednesday at Hollywood Park.
Trained by Richard Mandella for Diamond A Racing Corporation, the 4-year-old daughter of Pleasantly Perfect out of the Spend A Buck mare Harvest The Gold won her second in a row. She had defeated maidens by 2 ¼ lengths on Feb. 12 at Golden Gate Fields.
Off the board in the first three races of her career, Miss Pleasant, who provided jockey Joel Rosario with his third win of the day, increased her earnings to $47,320.
In the $44,400 first level allowance race for older fillies and mares, Miss Pleasant ran the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.56 while winning by 1 ¾ lengths. She paid $26, $9,40 and $3.20.
Broken Silence, the 2-1 second choice under Rafael Bejarano, tracked throughout and wound up 4 ¾ lengths clear of third place finisher Diamond Tags. Broken Silence paid $3.80 and $2.20. The 4-5 favorite, Diamond Tags made a mild bid while wide around the turn, but weakened. She finished a nose in front of Victoria Reel. The show price on Diamond Tags, who was ridden by Martin Garcia, was $2.10. Silver Games and Miss Mojito completed the order of finish.
Earlier in the day, retiring trainer Greg Gilchrist went out a winner when 11-10 favorite Island Of Zen took the fifth, a $25,000 claimer for 3-year-old fillies.
The half-length win by Island Of Zen, a Stormy Atlantic filly owned by RAD Stables and ridden by Rosario, was the 1,529th of Gilchrist’s career and increased his purse earnings to over $24.56 million.
The most accomplished horse Gilchrist, 62, trained was Lost In The Fog, the Eclipse Award winning sprinter of 2005. He also trained California bred champions Soviet Problem and Work The Crowd as well as stakes winners such as High Resolve, Wild Wonder and Wild Promises.
